My dad has just given me a 1987 21' Proline CC with a 2000 175 johnson. The previous owner took the automatic oiler off of it saying he didn't like the way it worked. Does anyone know of any issues that would have warranted the removal, and would it be worth the time and money to hook it back up? I have the service manual for the engine but I don't know if all of the components are there or not.

I doubt he removed the pump and replaced it with something else. Most likely he unhooked the incoming oil line and capped it off. If the oil tank is still there you can simply rehook the line as per the manual (bleed the line) and use the oil injection. I'd clean the tank so it's nice and fresh to start with.

Re: Johnson 175 automatic oiler

People get all worked about oil injection systems and unfortunately many engine failures get blamed on oil injection when other factors actually caused the failure. That blame allows the crooks in the business to sell you an expensive pump that likely didn't need to be replaced. Go ahead and hood it back up, and plug in the harness. Clean the tank and fill partially with fresh oil. Then premix fuel for the fuel tank. This will ensure the engine is lubricated while you determine if the pump is working. When you add oil to the tank, mark the level. When you have run about 12 gallons of fuel through the engine, check the oil level in the tank. If it has not gone down, the pump is not working. If it has gone down, add oil to bring the level back up to the line. If it took a quart or close to it after running 12 gallons, you can be assured the pump is working and can quit premixing. Just keep an eye on oil level until you are confident it is reliably delivering oil.
