Johnson 175 Super Seahorse Starter ??

I bought a boat over the weekend with a 1978 Johnson 175 hp Super Seahorse motor. The starter will spin and send the bendix up, but when the bendix makes contact with the flywheel, the shaft of the starter will just spin and not the bendix. I was told from the guy that I bought it from that I could just buy a bendix and replace it. I have search the internet and can not find one. Maybe I am looking the wrong places. Or should I just go ahead and buy a complete new starter?

Thanks

The part number that you are looking for, I believe is 0390104. It cost around $47.00. If you buy a new starter it will probably run around $1560.00.
You can check out the part on marineengines.com

Should have been $150.00 not $1560.00

Re: Johnson 175 Super Seahorse Starter ??

Thanks guys. I went home at lunch and looked at it. I did not see a number on the stater to tell which one it is. I am thinking of buying a new one, instead of replacing the drive assembly. Since I plan on keeping the boat for a while. When buying on does it matter what kind I have now? If I am replacing the starter?

How hard is the drive assembly to replace, if i decide to go that route?

Here is a picture of the starter.

Also where is the id plate on this motor? I looked and did not see one.

a starter/alternator shop can do it for you. as said probably 1/2 price of new one, and will be like new one.
