Johnson 18 FD11 1957 Lube question.

Hello,

As you can see I am new here and have been lurking for a little while.

My lower unit has two plug holes , one lower and one higher. I know to change the plug seals every time these are accessed. My question is regarding changing the oil. Do I fill it from the top one? How do I know when to stop? ...or do I fill it from the bottom till it comes out the top?

One more thing. The fluid that came out of the bottom when I barley pulled the plug was...a 1/8th teaspoon of water followed by almost pure white liquid. It was so white I am thinking there must be some kind of lube that is white. It did not seem bubbly.

I want to rebuild the lower impeller and seals. Do I order these from who? OMC or are they just the same here.

Thank you for your time.

Mark

Mark, It sounds like you have some leaking seals. I think they are available, but am not sure of the source. Someone will likely chime in.

After you replace the seals, fill the gearcase from the bottom until lube comes out the top. Insert the top plug, and then quickly insert the lower plug. If the motor is mechanical shift (you have a shift lever on the starboard side), use any marine gear oil.

No seal kit for that motor. You have to pick out and order individual parts. Evinrude dealer items.

Thank you for the replys. Do I understand that Evanrude supplies the parts for the old Johnson engines. It sounds like I need a manual with a breakdown of pics and part numbers . I am trying to imagine describing every part as a go along looking and not knowing the nam.

I thought the were popular enough engines to have kits.es of the parts. Thanks again for your time. Just another note. This liquid looks as white as milk, I know it seems like a water issue though.

Is the oil in the lower unit thin or more like grease? Someone might have put Lubriplate 105 (a light grease) in there. It is pure white.

just call laingsoutboards.com and tell them you need a lower unit seal kit for your motor. Specify if it's the FD-11 or FD-11K, or whatever. The prop shaft seal may vary from the early FD-11's or the later ones, which use the '58 model propshaft seal---if I remember correctly.

Yes, you have water in it, yes you need new seals. Yes, you will want to know how to get the shift shaft bushing out. F-R sells the tool. I should get one myself. The poor alternative which I usually do is to use a 5/16" tap to tap about 3 threads, put a bolt in it, and knock it out from the other side. Get a cheapo seal puller to pull the prop shaft seal and drive shaft seal.
Good luck,
JBJ

Yea, I bought the tool from F_R and it works great. The money I spent on it, really was worth it, for the ease it is to pop out the shift rod real. Vintageoutboard.com sells kits for these lower units too, and they are great quality seal kits too. Kinda like OEM was back in 57.;)

I have the FD-11 parts manual if you want it. If so PM me with your email address and request. Steve.

Thank you guys again and again.

The fluid is thin. I am going to post pics of it on Sunday when I have time. It looks like my lower part of my lower unit is blue under the first layer of paint. This is the part that has the bolts that face up holding it on (one larger facing down) This includes the part to the bottom that holds the last part of the prop shaft. I am getting a manual thanks to Steve...again thank you so much.

F_R ? Is this and Acronym or the actual name for a parts place ..."Freds_Retail" LOL ...no really I guess my green is showing here :)

F_R does has not replied to two PM's so....is this a special "Seal Removal" tool I can find for these engines? Is there a secret tool source hand shake I was supposed to use?? odd

That's odd......F-R is totally reliable. You can bet something is wrong with the system or his computer, or he's actually enjoying himself in his own boat for once...:)

Get a 5/16" tap, normal thread--not fine, and tap about 3 good threads in the bushing. Screw in a 5/16" bolt, and knock it out from the bottom of the case with a 1/4" whatever. There should still be enough material for the bushing to function after the tap job.
Good luck,
JBJ

JBJ, you weren't supposed to tell him that. He hasn't done the secret handshake yet!!!

I changed the lower unit oil. It went from cream (thick thick thick) to light syrup color (thick thick thick). I promised the kids a ride today and the parts have not come through yet. Thought perhaps a fresh change and a spin would not hurt a thing.

Don't worry, once he catches the bug and joins the old OMC club, we can still haze him!!!;)

As the Doctor from "Lost In Space" would say...Indupitively.

The kids had a blast!!

Lower unit looks like milk again, water is an issue to be addressed.

The Motor...OMG!!! I have never used it for hours like today. It purrrrrs like a kitten now that I adjusted the needles per "secret Files"
We went out 3 lakes from our park. About 5 miles all together. It ran out of gas as I puttered to the ramp LOLOLOL

Seriously, I heard from reading that these engines ran well but , come on...slow puttering perfection was just unbelievable because I have not tuned this engine yet (carb dismantle , I did do)

Great engines eh? I have many 18's and love em. Got a seized one yesterday. Will see if I can unseize it.

If it's milky after one day then you really need to do the seals.
