Hi.I am looking to replace the water pump on a 1955 Johnson CD-12. How do I get to it? What would need to come off from the motor or lower unit? Thanks

The powerhead has to be removed.--Then take the 2 nuts off the top of the shift rod--Good thing as it allows you to inspect the critical seal on top of the driveshaft.

Pull powerhead, disconnect shift shaft, drop lower unit, replace impeller.
You may need a powerhead to exhaust housing (base) gasket if current gasket rips upon removal. 7 bolts hold the powerhead down, and you’ll also need to disconnect fuel/air lines under cowl..pretty straightforward.

Thanks. I'm getting to see the picture on the steps needed. It seems straightforward but this would be my first go around on this type of stuff. As soon as the weather warms up a bit I'll start to attempt. Thanks

When you get the powerhead off, you will find this seal. ALWAYS replace the 303355 gasket and 303347 seal, plus make sure the rest of the parts are 100% good. Failure of this seal will eventually destroy the powerhead internals.
