Hello. This is a 1964 V-4 model number V4ML-10R serial number J2466921. It needs a lower unit due to someone letting it set up over winter with water in the unit. I need to know if the lower unit off either of the following will fit this engine:

1960 Evinrude 75 HP Starflight V-4 model 50523

1964 100hp johnson golden meteor

I dont have a model number for the Golden Meteor.

Thanks
Robert

Re: Johnson 1964 V-4 lower unit information

Any electric lower unit from Johnson/Evinrude V4 engines, 75hp > 90 hp will fit IF it's from between 1960 and 1968 ??
Then biggest engine back ig 1964 was the 90hp Golden Meteor, if you found it on Ebay (Item number: 4647492105 ) it will not fit .

You might try item number: 4648102955 ( manuel shif might require some diy skills )
Or Item number: 4647307038

Arne Kjetil

Thanks. Really the only part I need off of one of those units is the lower bullet, the part the prop shaft is in. Will any of those interchange with mine?

Robert

I just tried starting the motor. No spark. What should I check to get spark or is the age of the motor worth repairing?

Robert

Re: Johnson 1964 V-4 lower unit information

What's the problem with the unit you got ?? rust on gears ? , bad seals ?, cracks ??You might ask the sellers if they could just send you the parts you need if you bye the whole unit .

Can't say if the engine is worth saving, you should test the compression first.
It can be a nice engine on a vintage boat ( see signature )

No spark is a easy fix, this engine got a battery ingition system, if you got :
Good battery
Working coil ( any car coil will work )
Clean points, set to .020"
Clean distributor ( no cracks )and a working rotor.
Good wires.

You will have spark, no powerpack or other expensive parts .

Arne Kjetil

Re: Johnson 1964 V-4 lower unit information

The prop shaft housing on the bottom of the unit is broke in two pieces. The bullet piece on the bottom is really all I need right now.

Great, sounds like a basic spark system to me. I beleive I will just go ahead and repair the engine.

I got the engine with a vintage boat. Best I can tell it is the original engine. The only information I can find on the boat is an emblem on the side that says Crownline. It is a vintage boat and looks nice with the engine. All the boat needs is the floorboard repaired. It is in great condition otherwise. I am trying to find out information on the boat but havent had any luck so far.

Robert

Yes I have that one on my watch list. The only thing that is bothering me is the crack in the rear of the unit above mid ways. The seller has an arrow pointing at the crack. Will that crack effect anything? As long as it will still hold the gear oil and not leak it out then I guess I will be ok with that one. I just need to know the crack wont hurt anything. I am guessing by looking at mine that the area of the unit which has the crack either has nothing there anyway or is just a portal for water maybe. Please confirm what this area of the unit does.

Thanks
Robert

Drill holes at the ends of the crack, then saw the cracks open then have the cuts welded closed.

Re: Johnson 1964 V-4 lower unit information

I have a curious question here. I believe I will be going with th unit that was suggested by droll but this question is on a seperate unit.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...d=1,1&item=4647492105&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT

I am sure my answer here will probably come from droll. This auction is the Golden Meteor and it says 100hp. The seller has responded to an email I sent a little while ago about the engine. I am just curious about what the difference is between this one and the one I need. I know it wont fit and the unit even looks different now that I took a closer look at the pictures but the seller sent me measurements on the bolt patterns and they are the same as the unit I have. Im not saying it will fit, just curious what the difference is. I think my manual needs to hurry up and get here, that will probably answer a lot of my questions.. Anyway, like I said, I am just curious what the difference is. I have an idea what it might be, I am thinking maybe it is a long shaft version or something..

Thanks
Robert

Don't know if it will bolt on to your engine, but if it does, you will have to use the whole unit, the internals are different + it uses a bigger propeller .
And it's NOT a 1964 unit, it's a 1968/69 .

You can compare the difference here .( use 1968 100hp ( unit on Ebay ) and 85hp ( yours, but with no electric gear ) .

I wound tried the lower unit from the 90hp, OR wait some days, some new unit will pop up .

Arne Kjetil

Re: Johnson 1964 V-4 lower unit information

If the bolt pattern is the same it will fit, provided the driveshaft is splined the same way. I guess looking at the parts books for the old 90 and 100 would tell if the exhaust housing is the same. The outer covers look the same.

edit:
Exhaust housing(100) has a different nunber, but it shares it with the 1968 85hp electric shift. The 5 inch extention on the 85 is the same part number as on the 1964/65 90hp, therefore the 100hp gearcase does have the same bolt pattern as the 90.

There still might be differences with the water pump and water pipes.

Re: Johnson 1964 V-4 lower unit information

No problem. I was just curious and dont have any books yet to look it all up. I dont think the crack will be a problem but if so then I will just have to weld up the crack.

Good news, got the engine started today. Turns out the hot wire going to the coil was loose. Tightened the wire and she fired right up. It cuts off immediately but I hadnt cleaned the carb yet so I took it off and it definately needs a good cleaning. Somehow I lucked up and all the gaskets and everything on the carb are in great condition so I wont need a carb kit which I cant find anyway..

Thanks everyone
Robert
