Re: johnson 200 no spark

Remove spark plugs, rig up spark tester whereas you can set a 7/16" gap for spark to jump, disconnect the large RED electrical plug at the engine.

Now crank engine by using a small jumper from the battery cable terminal of the starter solenoid to the small 3/8" nut on the solenoid that energizes the solenoid.

Do you now have spark? If you do BUT did not with that RED plug connected, in all probability the ignition switch is shorted..... of course you're aware that the key must be in the ON position when the RED plug is connected.

Re: johnson 200 no spark

If actually backfiring (out the exhaust... loudly!), I'd suspect that you've had the flywheel off and did not torque the flywheel nut to specifications (145 foot pounds) which would result in a sheared flywheel key, effectively throwing the engine out of time.

If on the other hand, it's a mild spitting back type of thing, that's usually due to a fouled carburetor, a restricted slow speed fuel passageway, or a wrong size (too large) idle air bleed jet, or leakage at a fuel related gasket somewhere.

Re: johnson 200 no spark

Sheared flywheel key, OR plug wires crossed, OR orange wires from powerpack wired wrong to coils.... should be orange/blue TOP, orange CENTER, and orange/green BOTTOM, OR leads from timer base to powerpack wired wrong.
