Johnson 200hp Ocean Runner, starts strong, runs strong, idles strong. Goes to reverse and holds speed. Trolling 2.5 knots for two hours no problem. Come back to port, good , until I put it in reverse. Then it stalls, can’t get RPM’s up it just won’t stay running.
New filter, new water/fuel separator, new spark plugs, spark plug wires are good.
Any suggestions?

Model # is ?----There might be a shift switch on the motor linkages.----It kills spark to 3 cylinders at times.------Perhaps it is sticky.

I think you’re right but I can’t seem to locate it I do believe that I’m only running on three cylinders I understand it’s on the shift linkage but I looked up and down the starboard side and I can’t seem to locate it

It’s literally mounted on the shift linkage where the cable connects. Mounted on a plate. Has a wire coming out of it

So I found it, not easy to spot tucked behind throttle linkage and off a secondary linkage. I tracked the wires which are encased in a fabric, however I read that if I remove the ground wire it will deactivate the switch. I did that and she ran like new. The shifting was as smooth as if the switch was working. So since it will be a minor pain to remove all the linkage to get to the switch, wonder if I can run her without it?

You'll be fine until your in close quarters and you can’t get it out of gear, especially if the idle rpm is higher than normal, and run into something
