Johnson 200 Stator Failure

Recently while running a 98 Johnson 200 (carbed), the Tach stopped working and I noticed that the batteries were not being charged. I tested the two yellow leads to the Stator and found an open circuit. I pulled the flywheel and noticed a loop of the copper wire on the Stator had burnt a seperation in the wire.
I ordered a new Stator but I am concerned about the cause. Will I cook the new Stator when I fire up the motor? The rest of the components look fine and it doesnt appear that anything had rubbed the Stator to cause the wire to fail. One thought I had was that when I recently had the motor tuned up, the mechanic sprayed WD40 (or something similar) all over the powerhead. The Stator was wet with it. I was wondering if this could have caused conductivity between two coils and shorted it out?

Any Advice? The new stator will be in today and I don't want to fry it.
Thanks

on that old motor i would replace the rect-reg to & make sure that you do not have wing nuts on battery-nylock nuts & star washers

Re: Johnson 200 Stator Failure

The windings don't show any burning or other signs of heat do they? I suppose some sort of feedback through a blown rectifier could burn it up, but I would expect smaller wires to fry before that would happen. At any rate, WD-40 wouldn't cause it. I would say it is just one of those things. Stuff happens.
