Hello all!
I have a 1992 Johnson 225-V6 "Looper".
I have noticed the steering member that is a forged piece of steel that looks to be an integral part of the main pivot assembly has a substancial amount of rust and rot in the middle portion of the arm. It seems to have aprox 1/4" of thickness left from aprox. 3/8"-1/2" original thickness. Question is: Is there a recomended minimum thickness to this component? Is this dangerous as it is presently? What would be a ballpark estimate to replace this arm? Why is this the only location that has rust on the entire engine? BTW- It is used in salt water off Montauk point NY 5 months a year.

Thanks in Advance.

Change it.

It's fairly labor intensive but if it breaks you'll give anything to have done it.

The powerhead comes off -- the lower unit comes off -- the mid section comes off -- now you can get to the nut on the bottom of the steering shaft.

I think -- and I could be wrong -- the new ones are coated.

Good luck!

Thanks DHadley!

In your opinion...what is a fair labor estimate for an OMC auth. shop to perform this service?

It's always nice to have a general guideline and I don't think my local OMC guy would put it to me.
Thanks Again.

Re: JOHNSON 225 STEERING ARM!

You could go by the book but it really depends on rusted / stuck bolts and things of that nature. Some shops may just quote it as a job regardless of hours.

I think the book gives you something like 3 or 4 hours buts thats if nothing is stuck or broken off.

You might try it yourself. Start by seeing if the lower unit will come off easily and go from there.

Good luck!

Re: JOHNSON 225 STEERING ARM!

Hi,
Know this is an old post but this exactly describes my situation, 120hp Johnson, 1992, major rust on that steering arm.

This is for our cabin boat and it's either fix this or sell, so may tackle this winter. Pulling power head, lower unit and mid-section, does this require pulling the motor off the boat or can these pieces reasonably be removed while leaving the motor on the boat, I don't have a picker.

Finally, I read some posts that the clymer manual doesn't cover this sort of thing very well, which manual should I get to guide my actions? (I won't be paying someone to do this, so it's either me or nobody)

Thanks!

The powerhead will be the heaviest part, will need a hoist or help. Actually if it's on the boat it's OK, might be easier on a stand but the boat will do.

Re: JOHNSON 225 STEERING ARM!

I went and bought the SELOC Johnson repair manual for this motor, went through the entire thing, and not even one paragraph about the Steering shaft or procedure to remove. They do cover removal of the power head, lower unit, and I think the mid section, maybe that covers it.

Think I will give this a shot but perhaps I'll regret it after the second rusty bold I have to destroy to get the thing apart...

Thanks

Re: JOHNSON 225 STEERING ARM!

I had a 1988 225 Johnson with the same thing and had to replace the midsection because the arm was a part of that piece, it cost $800 to get the midsection and have a mechanic replace it.
