Johnson 225 won't go in gear

I have a 1996 ocean runner. I went to go on plane and it popped out of gear half way there. Revved up and now it won't go into either forward or reverse. I can not hear it engaging at all. Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

Take the shift cable off of the mtr and see if you can shift it on the mtr only. Then check your gear oil.

I had this very same problem. I just inspected lower unit and found shaft broke under water pump impeller.
