We have just aquirred this engine and had a problem with it immediately. It would not run at low speed. Today I pulled the cover, retorqued the head, (finding the lower cylinder slightly looser, this stopped a slight wheeze it had and noticibly increaced the compression). Cleaned the cylinders, plugs and all grounds with brake cleaner and WD-40. The lower coil was cracked, which I repaired with silicone for now. I also fixed what I think may have been a vacuum leak in the carb gasket with dielectric silicone.

I then used lubriplate on all of the governor pivots and on the bevel gears for the tiller throttle. It was sticky everywhere, and has quite a bit of slop from being manhandled at the grip. I put lubriplate all around the flywheel where it slips on the stator, and on the plastic roller, and detent plate etc.

Also, I am not sure if I should have done this but on the tiller back on the transmission, there is an adjustment that sets the low to high speed differnce at the tiller grip, like I said this was way out of whack, so after I eliminated all of the slop elsewhere I tweaked this screw to where its goving a decent looking range both at the flywheel and the carb that I think will work.

I would like to test it in a bucket or barrell, but I don't know what size, how much water, where to look, or more importantantly what I should see for proper operation. I know nothing about boats, but I work on everything else. I am doing this for my son. We want to learn together how
to maintain this old girl ourselves and we sincerely appreciate your help.

garbage can should be good...or a 45 gallon drum. just make sure the water is at least 4 to 6 inches over the water intake screens on the lower unit.also do not rev engine over 1500 rpm in neutral. if you put it in gear in the barrel it probably will slosh alot of the water out.be carefull you do not lose too much water.when was the last time the impeller was replaced?thats a must if you don,t know.check for a good stream of water from the pee holewhen running.

Where would the pee hole be? Do you have an exploded view of the motor? I don't even know where the water pump or impeller is.

Also the engine has no air filter or, is that a readily available item?

Thank you for the reply!
