johnson 25hp not peeing

Hi there. Just borrowed a friends boat with a 2001 25hp 2cyl 2 stroke Johnson.

Was running it on muffs and I'm not getting any water out the tell tale.
The block seems hot to to touch after a minute of running.
It's not the hose.

I'm hoping they don't pee on muffs but that's probably not it.
What could be the problem?

Thats interesting, i have the same problem with a 1986 120HP V4 looper. i only run it on the muffs for less than 2 minutes (last time was just to verify my carb cleaning was okay before i haul it out to the lake).

The tell-tale should squirt on a hose, the tell-tale is a visual indicator of the water pump operation. I would think you have a water pump problem.

I've experienced similar problems twice, the first time was my buddy's Mariner 35. Worked fine in the water, but not with the muffs....turned out all but one of the rubber vanes in the water pump were chewed out, and the pump could not draw water from ears (not enough draw from the pump to pull and push to the engine) but deep enough in the water, could push up enough to keep engine cool.....close call

The second was my Evinrude....turned out I had 2 problems....one was the telltale line was plugged, engine still ran hot after I cured it with clothes hanger wire and compressed air. Found both thermostats had seized shut after years of salt/fresh water operation.... once replaced, cured all symptoms.

Maybe one of these will strike a cord with what you are seeing.....sound to me like your pump is almost done with both the telltale and head running hot...both shouldn't happen together if there was flow.

how s your hose preasure ?
id try it in a bucket to cancel out hose preasure.
make sure muffs are tight and covering complete water inlets.
not peeing on the hose is the best indication of weak water pump.
we are talking about a rubber impeller and they break apart with time

Thanks all. Got it figured out.

Removed lower end.
Impeller was toast and bits of it were blocking the water tube.
Someones been running it without water.
