Johnson 25hp pinion gear and driveshaft

I just purchased a 2005 Johnson 25 hp electric start J25TELSOM with both short and long shaft. The engine was originally purchased with the longshaft attached but the original owner had a mechanic swap out to short shaft. I needed it back to a long shaft so I converted it. Long story short, the driveshaft for the long shaft does not fit into the pinion gear in the gearcase. I see that there are two different pinion gears. Is there a way to avoid swapping the pinion gear out? Or, what is the easiest way of replacing the pinion gear? Can it be accessed below the water pump and bearings? Thanks in advance!

No, you'll have to take gear case apart and install the proper pinion gear. Different pinion gears for different drive shafts.

Is there anyway to use an older model 20" driveshaft? I have also talked to a few mechanics that suggested welding an extension. Any thoughts on this?
