Hi Everyone,
Great forum! I have spent a few evenings reading all sorts of cool stuff since I found this place.

I recenty purchased a 14' fishing boat with a 25HP Johnson Modle 25R69D. It is a 1969 motor but it runds like a top. Usually starts first or second pull etc. Anyway When I tilt the motor up to take it out of the water it does not lock up. I can't see any way for this to happen. Am I missing something or is that just the way they are? BTW I am a boating newbee so if this is a silly question I apolagize in advance.

Re: Johnson 25Hp tilt question

Welcome Ian! Dad used to have that same motor (1971 model though) and we had very good service out of it (until it was stolen). Those 25s were introduced for 1969, being an 18-20 horse that revved higher. At 84 lbs. they weigh the same as a new 9.9 4-stroke.

Refer to the attachment for a legend of the various controls on that motor. Now look at #26 because that refers to the Tilt Tension Adjustment Nut. Just tighten it up a little (not too much) until the motor stays in positon. A little push should be able to drop the motor back down.

Those motors don't have all the features that the 9.5, 9.9-15 came with like positive stops for the tiller handle tilt etc. Those 25s were produced from 1969-1976 before being replaced by a larger displacement version with a new lower unit for 1977 (it weighed more too).

Re: Johnson 25Hp tilt question

THANKS!

Yep now it all makes sense. You see the problem is I am missing the little rubber (I think it was rubber) bushings (they call it a washer in the parts catalog). That goes between the transom bracket and the lower unit. Without these adjusting the tension on the bolt does not do any good other than chew up the trasom mount :( . That explains the spring on the end of the bolt though. I have been trying to find a set of the "washers" (Johnson Part # 0301983) for a couple weeks now. I can order them for $4 each which I have no trouble paying it is the $25 to ship them that I have a problem with

BTW what book is that page from? I would love to find a users/operators manual for that motor so far I have only been able to find a service manual.
