I am new to boating and have a 1990 Johnson 28 SPL motor and want to know where to hook up the water hose so I can run it at home. Can I use the muff device the mounts on the side or do I have to use a device that connects to the hole just above the prop? The holes in the side don't look large enough to allow much water flow. Thanks! Jmelford

The best way is to slip a trash can under the lower unit and fill it with water, make make sure the water level is well above the water pump.

Thanks! I know that was how it use to be done and that was how I was going to test it, but my neighbor said that the water gets too hot too quickly and not to use a trash can.

That's about the only way I run engines, on a hose the pressure will bypass the water pump and not tell you if the water pump is working. I use about a 30 gal trash can, you can let the hose run at a low volume to keep cold water in the barrel. I have run a motor for quite awhile without any worries of overheating.
