Johnson 3.3 outboard

I just purchased a used 1992 johnson 3.3. no owner manual, and I have a repair manual on order.

had a question though as i need to get this working this week and manual is back ordered - i noticed that it pees very little on low idle - only a drip - since I don't have manual yet - i am trying to find out:

1) where is impeller located?
2) where is thermostat?

Impeller is behind the prop.

There is no thermostat AFAIK

the part diagrams at "http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e" wiil help you a bit until you get the manual

i cleaned up the intakes and the impeller is fine. any thoughts on why it isn't peeing (a slow drip)...my next task is to drop the lower unit and run a line up the water line to see if it is corroded or gummed up.

First thing is to check that the indicator itself is not blocked including the connection at the engine end.

If you are really sure that the pump impeller is ok then there could be a blockage anywhere in the system.

thx. I checked the water indicator tube coming out of the block - nothing blocked there. I also inserted an 8" plastic tie into the block to see if there was anything clogged - the tie inserted into the block easily so it appears that most of the block is fine - so it must be in the tube somewhere in the lower unit or midsection...will diagnose tonite (after fixing garage door that broke last nite...)

I have no idea if that engine is likely to suffer the same but with my 6hp the grommet at the top of the water tube gets squeezed over the top of the watertube by corrosion around it until it completely blocks off the water flow. It looks very different but something similar could happen maybe.

that's what I was afraid of - i heard it involves taking off the head unit

good news is that I now have the SELOC manual - it came early.

i am going to try running a wire up the water tube by removing the lower unit. if that fails - then its probably the bloody grommet. when it rains it ours..at least I got the motor for a good price..,

I think I solved the problem.

Previous tests for water pee were based upon using a 5 gallon bucket - i think that was too small and preventing good water flow. I used a much larger container this time - and low and behold - she started flowing nicely.

My sense is that all of the poking around i did maybe dislodged some muck. That combined with a proper bucket size resulted in better water flow.
