Can any one help me, i need some info on a johnson 300GT VRO V8?? I bought this used outboard, but i know next to noting about it. I was told it is an '86 but i'm not really sure.

Where is the serial # located?
Where can i get an owners and/or a repair manual?
What is the FOT RPM MAX??

The motor sits on a 21" v-hull that probably weighs around 2000lbs, it max'es 3000 RPM's and goes around 50mph (on the log) with an aluminum prop. is that optimal, if not, what is?
I would love to get suggestion for a Stainless steel prop?

Hope for help
Martin the novice

Check on the left side of the engine bracket for the s/n and m/n. I think the max RPM at WOT should be around 5000-5500.

Cool motor. But I doubt that 3000 is WOT. They make very little power at that RPM. Lets check out the tach first and make sure it's correct. Make sure it's an OMC and it's on position 6.

Look at the top of either head gasket and tell us what it looks like. The 3.6 (small bore) will have a straight tang sticking out. The 4.0 has a notch cut in it. Either are great motors. The rev limiter is either at 6100 or 6700 RPM. Most likely 6700.

Good luck!

Hi Martin.

Your motor is quite rare in Denmark.

The 1989 specs (with Johnson trademarks) for it are

4 litre V-8 in 90 degrees
224 kw (measured on the prop axle) @ 6000 rpm
Servo steering
Command Center(R) remote controls with alarm
Electronic QuickStart(R) with CD ignition
VRO(R) variable oil mix
Top Charge(R) 15/35A marine alternator with regulator
S.L.O.W.(R) speed reduction overheat system
TNT(R) Trim tilt
Deep Guard(R) anti corrosion

Depending on leg length weight is 251,7 to 263,1 kgs.
Bore 93,6 mm
Stroke 72,6 mm
12v electrics
Max rpm range 5750-6250
Gear ratio 17:30
Four double carburettors
Water cooling with automatic thermostat and pressure regulator
Standard delivery was without propeller

List price in 1989 was 142.000 kr. although nobody paid that much for it.

I've seen the Fletcher 21' with outboard but have no specs for it. It was sold in 79/80 with 233 Mercruiser which (1400 kgs. incl. engine). Length is 6,50 m, beam is 2,18 m. It was made first in 1974 and established a new record for it's type of 79,6 mph on Lake Windermere.

In Denmark this boat is not very common and due to rather high running costs (as they were all powered pretty high and extremely expensive insurance), they normally spent only one or two seasons with each owner.

As a weight of 1400 kgs. + trailer exeeded most (Danish) car's towing abilities, not many of these have been trailered.

Good luck with her and watch your wallet ;)

Re: Johnson 300GT VRO

Thank you very much for all the info!... and so fast :)
I mis-posted the WOT, i does max 6000RPM, as is.
I need to get the boat out of it's winter covers to look for the numbers, but i'll definetly be back as soon as i get them!

Can you, by any chance, tell me what format the numbers are, and/or how many digits? i had a hard time finding them last summer :)

I was told that the guy who originaly bought the motor imported it from the US him self, there really isn't anything like it around here.. So any hint of where to get more info on anything relating to it is appretiated!

Thank again!

Re: Johnson 300GT VRO

One genuine specialist in your area is Brøndby Motor (ol' fella). He was the master behind the Brømo Racer. If anything is worth knowing about Johnson, he's the one. Hope he is still in business - he was introducing his son last time I spoke to him, 2-3 years ago.

One place you wouldn't want to take your problems is Nautic Boats, Mosede. Kind of people that will remove a prop with a sledge hammer. Otherwise try Holbæk Bådcenter, they've improved over the last years. Or Tempo Både, Hundige (watch your wallet).

Among others, Holbæk and Tempo originally sold Fletchers.

Just a few ideas...

Re: Johnson 300GT VRO

Brøndbyøster Motor Service is out of business - the son and father closed their buisness (after 30 + years) last fall.

They where wery disapointed by being let down By OMC - many of their old customers where wery bad treated by Johnson/Evinrude - no waranty etc. (seems like OMC/Bombadier totaly forgot the overseas customers) so Johnson/Evinrude is going to have a wery hard time selling anything in Denmark in the future.

Re: Johnson 300GT VRO

I live near Ballerup - so there is only 20 km betwean us.

I saw one in Ballerup - it was imported from Greenland and had some problems (carburators clogged and a bad lower unit) - but newer heard it run (was to big to put into the test tank).

I know that that one runs somewhere in copenhagen - the owner had a engineering company called "trillingerne" - his boat had a lot of stress cracks in the transom that i discussed with him (the boat was rated for 175 hp max).

I also know that there was 2 blocks used on the V8 (different cub inc.) there was also a 275 hp model based on the same engine.

Will mail you directly.
