Johnson 30hp not staying on

motor was bogging down in idle so i rebuilt carb, installed new fuel lines, bought new 9 gallon tank.
reinstalled carb and new spark plugs and now it won't stay on at all. comes on when i pump the bulb firm for no more than 5 seconds before bogging each time.
before this it was running fine, just bogging in idle and now it's not staying on.
re-pulled the carb and adjusted float. nothing changed.

i pulled off fuel line to carb and cranked. it seemed to be a good pulsing stream...laying horizontal the fuel shot out about 8 inches or so. not sure what force it's supposed to have.

i have not used a spark tester, but looked at the sparks and they are loud and strong.

i sprayed the carb throat with gas mix...it bogs down so quickly that's it's hard to tell if there's any effect. a couple times out of 20+ attempts to crank and spray, it sustained for a couple extra seconds.

i can't tell if it's fuel supply or ignition.

how should i proceed.

What are we working on, model number?
Sounds like you still have a carb problem.

Re: Johnson 30hp not staying on

is it common for folks to not seat the welch plugs good?
i'm going to pull the carb again and clean more...
is there a source for welch plugs in case i need to punch them out again...so i don't have to get another kit?

Re: Johnson 30hp not staying on

i just pulled out my low speed needle and the plastic bearing thing that the needle seats against was torn up.
perhaps that's what keeps the motor stalling...the needle didn't have any effect no matter where i set it.
if the low speed hole was blocked would the motor start and immediately stall in a few seconds?

before i rebuilt the carb there was no plastic bearing in the orifice and the needle was gouged. there's a little tab in the hole that i think it might have gotten stuck on and tore when i screwed the needle in. do i need the plastic bearing?

If you figure out the model # you'll get a lot more help. There should be a metal plate with the model and serial #s on the motor.

Re: Johnson 30hp not staying on

i can get the model number tomorrow.

the low speed needle and the bearing i'm talking about are referenced with pics in this thread: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=485653

the bearing is obviously not necessary since i ran my boat for about 3 years without one, but i'm guessing it would provide a better idle. there is a little tab at the end of the threads within the low speed orifice that is blocking the bearing from being pressed in and fully seated. just wondering if that tab is there for a reason; if i need the bearing; where i can get individual pieces of rebuild kits; and if the characteristics of a blocked low speed orifice are the same that i've been having...stalling out 5 seconds after it starts?
i'll find out tomorrow if it works when i get it back on...just wondering.

turns out it was the crushed low speed needle bearing.
starting up and idling fine now.
