Thanks for reading this! Trying to do a favor for my father-in-law, I cleaned the carb on his 1993 Johnson 30hp J30TELETA and put in a new OMC carb kit and float. We put the engine in a trash can of water. The engine started very quickly, but immediately began to run very rich. I do not have a tach, but it seemed that I could not get the engine to run at less than 1000-1500 rpm without stalling. While running, the engine was smoking excessively with a strong fuel smell in the exhaust.
The low speed idle screw was set at 2.5 turns out per the service manual. I tried 1/2 a turn in at a time trying to lean it out until I had it turned all the way in. The engine never really leaned out.
Any help would be much appreciated!!!
Thanks,
Mike
