Johnson 35hp? date & wiring questions

I bought what I thought was a 1959 Johnson Super Sea-Horse 35hp outboard but after looking up the model number in a website it shows it to be a 1961 40hp. The number is RDS-23 and the serial is 2167203. Can someone verify that this is either a 59' 35hp or a '61 40hp?. And the person I bought it from cut all of the wires about 6 inches from the motor. There is <br />3 Black wires (one is the ground to the battery)<br />1 Red wire (+ to battery)<br />1 Blue wire<br />1 Yellow wire<br />1 Brown wire<br />And 1 White wire. Can someone tell me where they go???? <br /><br />Thanks

Hi bill<br />Yes your motor is a 1961 40hp model. The wiring schematic for the 40hp from 61 to 65 is basicly the same, depending on equiptment. Elect shift, generator,elect. start,etc. If you will post your e-mail address I will try and send you a schematic.

I hope you have the junction box that is used for wiring. All of those wires go into a junction box that also contains the starter solenoid. If you need a photo of one let me know. I have some photos of one I am selling on the fiberglassics website.

Alcan,<br /><br />It does not have electric shift, I do not know if it has a generator but it does have electric start I know because I installed new battery cables and the positive wire arked when I connected it to the battery. But it still works. I have the ground for the battery connected to the starter bracket and the positive wire connected to the starter terminal. <br /><br />Thanks

I've just gotten a RDS-23 and the wires are cut. <br />I do have the control box with solenoid too.<br />The ignition switch is missing though.<br />61 40HP Johnson. The color on the wires is washed out- would you have the schematic that you can email?<br />Thanks<br />parravan@yahoo.com
