Johnson 35hp power problem

I recently bought a 1982 Johnson 35hp 2 cyl. engine. It never really has run great. It seems like it starts cutting out at top speed. However, yesterday when I first put it on the lake it ran better than it ever has, full power, planed out great. Then, near the middle of the day it started cutting out at full throttle. I drove it all the way down the lake at about ten miles per hour. It starts out like it's going to plane out when I throttle up but it starts cutting out. I bought a carb. kit and rebuilt that but nothing changed. Any help???

By the way, the whole time I've owned it it will always only run with the choke closed (on). Open the choke plate and it dies instantly.

Well, it's fuel related for sure. Either that carb didn't really get clean (did you remove the jets and clean behind them), or you've got an air leak in the fuel lines someplace causing you trouble.

Re: Johnson 35hp power problem

The last time I rebuilt a carburetor was around 1985. The kit came with these round concave disks that I wasn't sure what they were and/or how to install them. I put in the new gaskets, float, float valve and seat. I cleaned everything good with carb cleaner. What else should I have done?

Re: Johnson 35hp power problem

Those little disks cover the idle jet passages. Sounds like those are working okay - no idle problems, right?. However, the high-speed jets probably need to come out. You need to make a special tool, tahsasdaddy or ezeke, or F_R or others have posted how to make them about a zillion times, so do a search and you should come up with something.

Generally speaking though, here's the procedure. I'm sure I missed something.

remove carb
remove core plug (little metal disk)
disassemble the remainder, including the high-speed jets.
separate out any plastic bits, and soak the rest in carb soak (1 gal can of goo-sklorbing-chemical badness) for a few hours.
remove and rinse in water or wipe clean (just so you don't take all the skin off your hand from the chem-o-goo)
blast out every passage with either compressed air, or carb-cleaner aerosol.
press in new core plug
put in new float valve seat
reassemble the remaining parts
set float

enjoy

I DO have idle problems! How do you get those disks out? You say "press the new disks in" How is that done?
Plus - THANKS FOR THE HELP!!!

Take a small nail or awl and carefully punch through them so you can lever them out. To put them back in, push them in with your finger and give a light tap to expand them..then I put some of the wifes clear fingernail polish around the edges(after it's been all cleaned and sprayed out).
