Hello everybody, my new 1982(?) Johnson 4.5 hp project isn't pumping water, so I wanted to take the lower unit off. Everything going well until it seemed like the gear linkage was keeping the L/U from coming out, so I started looking for points where the linkage could be attached, but I couldn't find anything making me think it doesn't necessarily have to be the gear linkage keeping it from dropping out. Does anybody know what my problem could be? Thanks in advance. IMG_20210420_183404.jpg

There is no disconnect for the shift linkage.----3 bolts loose / out and it should slide apart.----Still folks out there that do not maintain / grease driveshaft splines I guess.

Look for a bolt underneath the plate just ahead of the prop. Take it out.

Use a flat pry bar or something similar and run it on top of the gearcase housing. Put a block of wood under the skeg, and put a foot on each side of the leg standing on the pry bar. Rock a little and see if you can get the driveshaft to release.

If thats the bucket you used to see if it will pump water I dont think you can get that motor in deep enough to pump. You need a deeper barrel! More than likely needs a new impeller anyway but It should be in at least 6 inches above the impeller to pump.

Thought it might be chicken soup. What's the deal with the hose out of the back of the leg?

That would be used on a sailboat.-----Motor mounted in a ---" lazarette" ----gets rid of the exhaust.
