Johnson 40 HP without a generator charging system

I have a 1960 Johnson 40HP outboard. Model RDS-22. I am refinishing an old wooden Lyman boat and getting ready to put it in the water. I've never run the motor in the water, but have barrel tested the motor and it runs fine on short tests.
It does not have a generator, but has electric start. I'm having a hard time identifying how the system recharges. What different charging systems will it have? Also, is it possible that there is no charging system?

Thank you.

It seems to me like, and these memories are going WAY back, that some of those early electric start 40's did not have charging systems, nor did they need them! A good running 40 starts nearly immediately, and would run almost all summer on a charge.

^^^ bin there done that.----Unless you need to run lights , big boom box or 2 fish finders , electric downriggers the battery will start the motor for near 3 months.------A wee solar charger would be all you needed.

Not sure about the wee solar chargers (can't hurt but not sure how much it will help). I believe I've never had a generator system that worked well and proved durable, but that may be the operator rather than the system. Just charging them at home works fine or at the slip if in the water. A dual battery system for electronics is also a solution.

I had a 55 hp Chrysler ('72 model, I think) that had no alternator, and that worked fine as well.

If you have a generator (or run across one) with all the bits, try to use it.) But otherwise, just go boating.

??----That belt driven generator was standard of the 40 HP electric shift models.----Built from 62 to 1970.-----It worked well.

^^Yup. Can't deny it. User issue in my case, no doubt.
