Re: johnson 40, starts but won't keep running

Since both coils allow it to run on number two I would do a compression check. You might have bad rings in number one. It still could be points and condenser. You say that you just reset the points and they "look fine" Sometimes they are not. I would check all the wires carefully and look for any corrosion or loose connections from them and the condensers. There shouldn't be any play on those coils. Is your flywheel set correctly so it is not rubbing the coils?

Your timing is preset by the flywheel key. If you have sheared this or not torqued it down good it can spin and then it would throw your timing off. There should be no reason your timing is off except this.

Thanks fireman,
I found out about rhe timing just awhile ago
when i was swtiching condensers, and guess what ?Fire to # 1, I looked at all the wires ,seem ok,
I know i need condensers, The coils will run motor , but they have fine cracks all over them is this ok? or should i buy the whole ignition kit,Now that i know it will run on both cylinders i won't mind buying the parts, I got the motor cheep as is, and did not know if it would ever run
but thanks to all of you on this site it will see the water again, OK now the lower unit, The tank
the motor is in was clear water now after running
motor in it there is a thick oil on top,
So i guess i also need a lower unit seal kit,
Is this a big job?
Thanks again
river run

Possibly not. These engines exhaust under water and it could just be unburnt fuel. Check your lower unit oil. Undo the staight screw (not the phillips) and see if grease runs out. If not get a tube of johnson/evinrude lower unit oil and remove the bottom straight screw. Shoot oil in the bottom hole until it comes out the top one. Then replace both screws. If the oil that comes out the top hole is milky then you have a lower seal bad. If not just keep an eye on your lower unit oil. If it gets low or you see it leaking out when out of the water for a period of time (week to week) then you also might have a bad seal and it will show you which one. If you do replace these seals make sure you change the impeller in the water pump while you are there.
