I'm hoping someone can help. j40tletb tilt stuck in down position. Have power to all switches. No noise from the relays though when the switches are pushed. Trying to get to the motor to check for power there.

I have unscrewed the screw on the bottom of the tilt to lift up the engine, but I still can't bring the engine up. Is there a lever or some trick to maually lifting the engine? I'm unsure of the year, but I think the engine is in the low to mid 1990's.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks Tashasdaddy but... that didn't work. Any other ideas? Could it just be binding against something that I can't see??

Re: Johnson 40hp tilt stuck in down position

It is a 1993. First thing make sure the resevoir is fully topped up. Raise the motor fully and rest it on the trail locks, remove the fill screw, the large slot on the resevoir, and top it up, cycle it 5 to 6 times, then top it up again, continue doing this until you can no longer add any. It is self bleeding. Make sure the manual release valve is closed tightly, that is the screw that you unscrewed. Will it lower but not raise? Or is it completely dead? What colour wiring is coming off of the trim motor? Have you checked the fuses?

It is completely dead. I have three wires - red always hot, blue- hot with up button pushed and green- hot when down button is pressed.

All fuses are okay. Both electrical wires are getting power as far as I can trace them to the motor, however, I cannot see the motor because the engine is stuck down.

I backed off the big screw and still cannot lift the engine. Even lightly prying engine with a bar it will only budge 1/2" to 1". There has to be something else holding it in place? Any ideas???

Thanks
Randy

And you have a dual solenoid setup? What large screw are you referring to, the manual release valve? I dont suppose you could take a pic of the stern of your boat could you?

my suggestion, is to go here and look at the tilt unit. there are 2 types for the 93 40 hp. http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/Accessories/Literature/?popup=true"

The large screw I loosened was right at the back of the unit. Looking at the diagram it is the screw for the poppet valve. I also see a smaller screw on the side. In the diagram it is call the manual release. Have I been unscrewing the wrong screw?

His is the "B" model, according to his run suffix. Your manual release valve is on the starboard side of the trim motor, below where it mounts to the pump. There will be a retaining ring, like a horse shoe on the outside of it. Is this the screw you were referring to? Try releasing that.

SOrry I was writing at the same time as you, yes, that was the wrong screw, you need the manual release.

:D:rolleyes: Thanks everyone. I got it. It helps when you get the right screw. By the way, the wires to the motor were exposed. Apparently rubbed against something and wore thru causing is to short.

Thanks for the help!!

do all the "B" models have the manual release valve? I don't seem to find it on my unit.
