Hello,
My 1988 Johnson failed Sunday. I was running
real slow and it clunked (sorry for the term)
and quit. I tried to crank it and it would
not even turn over. I had to keep bumping the
starter for it to get to a point so it would
turn over. It would then start but would not
go when put in gear. I then had to bump it many times again to get it to even turnover. Finally,
got to start again and limped back to dock very
slowly. At home, I changed plugs and battery, still it will not turn over. I have to bump the
starter and then after several tries it does try
to run but dies. Any Clues?

Sounds like your engine is trying to seize.

Cooling?

Sufficient lubrication?

Maybe you also have a connection problem in the large guage wires for your starter.

Good luck. :)

Hello,
I put the called amount of oil in (50:1)
when I last got gas. When I finally got it to
restart Sunday water was coming out of the jet
so I assumed it was fine. What you say sounds
close, it sounds like its trying to seize.

What can I do?

Sounds like it's overheating. Change the impeller in your water pump. Run a tank of 32:1 or 40:1 through it then go back to 50:1. I think this might cure it's "seizures".
