Johnson 48spl value?? (Now with pictures)

Hi,

I have been offered a Johnson 48SPL (year unknown) that has been sitting since 2001 when it was last run. NOTHING else is known about it's condition so what I am asking is possibly impossible but the guy has no idea as to what it's worth or what he wants for the motor and wants ME to make an offer for it...

Anyone have an idea as to what I should start off at..?

I've got a rough 20' Crestliner pontoon boat with a '96 48 on it. The motor runs but probably needs a power pack and the lower unit leaks. The deck is rough but the pontoons are solid. Couldn't get $800 for the whole thing. The junkyard would pay that. It's a buyer's market with the cost of gas. Someone here has a '96 advertised for $1800 but he's dreaming. In other words, it isn't worth much. Anything that burns gas isn't in demand.

It would help if you could post a picture (how clean? leaks?) Year? Tilt trim work? Fresh or salt water? The model number should be on or near the mounting bracket.

If you can't do the work yourself, mechanics charge $60-90 hr.

A farmer recently gave me a freshwater 1985 20hp Evinrude. It would probably run ok with a power pack (mice chewed wires) and carb cleaner. I would have paid $100 just for the parts. He just wanted to get rid of it and it helped me out since I needed a lot of parts off of it and I'm unemployed.

First thing I would do is put the ears on, and see if it will run or fire. Is there water in the lower unit?

1987...ITS A CRAP SHOOT.... you dont know what you are getting into with out running a motor....I wouldnt pay more than $200 for a motor with no info....only because i dabble in them and can sell it off for parts or use for another motor in case it is ruined already.

in you could run the motor on a boat in the water up to WOT and it ran good and was clean, then it would be worth at least $700-$1000 around here.

I have a 1988 but it is camoflauged...lowers the value....has 150 psi compresssion!!!!! they run rough on muffs at idle...natuyre of the beast

does it have a tnt added???

Pictures,such as they are........

Trying to get the guy to pop the lid and try to hand turn the flywheel to see if it's at least free.... No battery, no way to check the tilt...

id worry aboutr a bent prop or drive shaft with that much skeg gone.

that motor doesnt have power TNT ..it is manual only.

if you cant check compression...the motors value cannot be more that that of a parts motor...even then, who knows what the lower unit is like

drain some fluid see what comes out..if water has been sitting in there for years the gears and bearings and shafts in the lower unit are rusted ugly

since thew water will be on the bottom with all the gears...

If it doesn't have a tilt/trim then there is probably a plastic lever on the right side of the mounting bracket that releases the motor. Looks like a good one to stay away from unless parts are needed. Fuel pump diaphrams are probably hard. Fuel lines rotten? Lower unit housing not good. Starter froze? Compression? The power pack can go bad just sitting there (I need one by the way 585260 if the wires aren't chewed off.)

Put some lube in the cylinders to soak before you turn the flywheel.

I had a nice 1970 14' Lone Star speedboat with VG trailer and 1962 40hp Johnson I couldn't get $350 for. Motor needs starter and mounting bracket. Like I said times are tough and not much demand for boats in farm country.
