Re: Johnson 4hp Not Pumping Water

How do you know it is not pumping water? Does it overheat? There are six or eight small holes on the back of the leg below the cowl that water should mist/spray out of. Run your hand behind the holes and see how wet you hand gets. If the pump is working you should see water coming out these holes. I don't know if the 79 has an indicator (pee hole) but I doubt it does. Rick.

Re: Johnson 4hp Not Pumping Water

Hello - I have a 1990 johnson 4hp deluxe model J4RDHLESR and mine is not producing any spray from the 4 weep holes mentioned in this thread. There is forced air coming out of these holes but no water. Is this a water cooled motor and if so what is the next step in narrowing this problem down to the cause?
Thanks

crobar: In the future you should start a new post rather than piggy back on anothers thread. Your water pump is shot and yes your motor is water cooled. Please don't run it until you get a new impeller into the lower leg. The hot air coming out the holes is exhaust gas which is normal but there should be water spray mixed with it. I would suggest you get an OMC REPAIR manual for your specific motor. Ebay would be my first choice. Changing the impeller is a fairly simple task. Remove four bolts pull leg down, remove shift linkage bolt, remove leg the rest of the way. You will see the water pump. It is the first thing that the drive shaft will be going through. Four more bolts to remove the drive shaft being very careful not to loose the little pin that engages the impeller. I would suggest a careful look at the entire pump for damage and wear. If it looks OK all you will need is the impeller. Take a good look at the grommet that the water tube goes into at the top of the pump. When you respond nest start your own thread and best of luck to you. Rick.
