First off, stop using 50:1 in that outboard. It's designed for 24:1, and has plain bearings.

Second, you need to clean your carburetor and install a carb kit. Poor idling is almost always a problem of a dirty carb.

Finally, search here for carburetor adjustment, and follow the instructions, once you get your carb clean.

While it was made by Gale Products Division of OMC, it is related to a Johnson, but not 100% the same as a Johnson. Some parts are, some are not.
Have you tried adjusting the slow speed carb needle? Could be all it needs.

We need a model number. Is it a Johnson or is it a Gale-made Sea King?

If it's CD-1?, then it's a Johnson, which would make it a Seahorse, not a Sea King. It still needs a carb cleaning. Some little bit of gummy crud is partially blocking the low-speed circuit. Since you already tried adjusting the low speed jet, it's time to clean and kit that carb.

It's not hard to do, and your little tiddler will love you for it.

That could be anything from a 1954 CD-10 to a 1962 CD-19.

All of those call for a 24:1 fuel mix.

Also, I think the 1958 and older Johnson 5.5Hp used a two line pressurized gas tank. Now quite a few of these models have been manually converted to a single line hose by adding a fuel pump to the motor, but if yours has the two line version, you have narrowed it down to CD-10 to CD-15 or 1954 to 1958.

Poor idling can also be caused by bad compression. Given that the previous owner was using 50:1 mix I think I'd be checking into that right away. Good to eliminate the scary stuff first IMHO.
