johnson 5 hp outboard help

i have a johnson 5 hp 1999 i dont have the operators manual or the service manual iam working on that as we speak it says 32 to 1 can some one expain how much that is for 3 or 6 gallon mix or should i be mixing 50 to 1

Please give us the model number from your engine. Need to verify that it is really a 5 hp and really a '99. Neither OMC nor BRP ever made an outboard that called for 32:1.

50:1 means 50 parts gas to one part oil. What ever units you want to use, it's still 50:1...50 gallons gas to one part oil....or 50 cups gas to one cup oil.

At 50:1 ratio, six gallons of gas would require about 16 ounces of oil. Three gallons of gas would need about eight ounces of oil.

Also, you can buy an handy "oil measurer" at any marine store that easily tells you how much oil for a certain amount of gas. Just find the ratio on the handy measurer, determine the amount of gas you used to fill tank, then fill the oil up to that mark.

Make sure the tank is thoroughly mixed. I usually have an additional six gallon plastic can that I will first put about 16 oz in first, add about a gallon from the gas pump, thoroughly mix the can, then add the other five gallons while agitating the can. I will then use this plastic can to fill my tank on board.

Here is a handy gas mix calculator I have found helpful. No idea why they call it Marine gas as a mix is a mix whether your mixing for a snow blower or an outboard even though the oil type is different. Enjoy, Rick.
