I bought an old (i am assuming late 50's early 60's) either 5 or 5.5 seahorse with an internal gas tank and there is no plate on the transom clamp to search for the model/year. Thing has a shift lever on the right top of the tank that links to a shifter cable (not sure if there is reverse either) and the carb adjustment is on the other side with a combined priming pump. The carb is located on the left side of the motor. Can anyone help me out with what year and hp this thing is likely to be and if there is a plate with a model number on it someplace? My 14 year old son has shown an interest in it and i don't want to lose any momentum on it by guessing.PB090688.JPGUnfortunately i only took a pic after we tore the tank and mount off, but this is the carb with the priming rod removed. Thanks.

I think you have a model TN-28, built 1952-53. Look on the opposite side of the motor from the view in your picture. You will find the model and serial number stamped on a flat spot toward the bottom of the cylinder block.
It has forward and neutral. Spin the motor around for reverse.

See that mixture adjustment needle on the other side ?---Comes out at an angle and adjusts low speed mixture going in the rotary valve.--------Marketed as a 5 hp motor.

I spot original cracked coils up there! They will be junk and will need to be replaced..

there is an aomci member that sells the leather primer seals for that carb you have there. Visit aomci.org for more info.

This site will help you out with that motor. A lot of good info here.

edit: That needle racerone mentioned, I have found 5/8 out from seated about perfect on all the TNs I have tuned.

Thanks for all the info, turns out it is a TN27, though it doesn't appear that will change much. My son is all ready to re-do the ignition and then we will tackle the carb. Thanks for the advice on the carb setting. This set up is new to me, my other projects have been 1963 and onwards so i have some learning to do. Thanks again. Tim

The only item you will have trouble perhaps finding is the water pump impeller. There are a few still out there, but what I do, is buy an impeller from a 5.5hp, and bore out the center ID a little with sandpaper, to fit over the TN shaft. That is the only difference. And it is minimal.

My son is pretty excited to get a move on it before the snow flies, which the weather says will be tomorrow, so we have ordered up the new ignition parts and i can get the copper core wire in town. If we can push though that, we might tackle the carb rebuild before next spring. Outside of the leather primer seals, are there any other things I should be ready for (other than the usual fun of taking apart a 60 year old motor, of course)? Thanks.

The leather seals are not to be dismissed. I really need them for my 1950 TN-26 but I can't subscribe to the old-timers archaic ways of doing business as a Canadian. The seals will make a world of difference for that old T-series motor.
