Hello All. My outboard has been out of action for a couple of years. Replaced a lot of electrical components. Replaced fuel, cleaned carbs (probably not properly), engine started a few days ago. Ran well for a while, at a mid-speed. When I powered down, the engine cut out. This happened a few times, but I managed to start it with some difficulty. The last time this happened, I couldn't start it again, had to get a tow home. Still no start. Checked drain plugs, plenty of fuel in carburettor bowls. Any ideas? What to check/do next?

Check compression. did you replace the water pump along with all the other parts?

Revisit your carb clean out. Don't use the cheaper Japanese parts. Use original equipment parts. (I'm talking thru experience here with the cheap parts).

Thanks for your advice. I have taken off the carburettors and will clean as well as I can. Can someone tell me what the primer lines to the carburettor do, and how do I check that that system is working? Pumps water well, so I don't think anything wrong with water pump, will check compression when I can.

The electric primer replaces choke flappers.----The electric primer is a valve.----It is not a pump.-----When you push in the key while cranking it opens.----The fuel pump provides fuel to the open primer valve.----This fuel then goes directly into the motor and bypasses the metering circuits in the carburetor.----It is used only for starting.-----It works very well.----The red lever is for manual operation of the valve.-----Yes this motor can be started with a dead battery and by using rope on the flywheel.
