I have a Johnson 50 hp that is a 1975 on my Aluminum restore. I have also acquired another Johnson 50, but can't determine which year it is. Someone has removed the tag from the mount. In my manual I read where you can find this info on a disc on the top and back of the engine. I did check this on both motors and my 50 on the boat has two different ID's. The second 50 don't have all the info my 75B does. So I'm including some pics to see if anyone can help me date this motor. There are several differences between the two, but are also the same. My 75B has tow cables for throttle and one for shifting. The other one has only one cable. The carbs are almost the same, but have a couple of differences and the wiring is on the opposite side from my 75B. So, can anyone help?

As said prior, it is either a 71 or a 72. A pic of the cowl will help determining the year. The cowl anyway.

Yes, electric shift lower unit has 1 cable. It is not swapable whatsoever with an manual shift lower unit. Many upper engine parts will probably swap though.

Re: Johnson 50 year?

Thanks everyone for your input. I did a search on the Internet for both 71 & 72 and found a pic of a 72 with the same cover that is on mine. So, guess it's a 72. Thanks again all.
