Hello from Sweden again!

Tried to replace the propeller on my Johnson 50HP 1975 today. Stopped at a sand strip, tilted the engine and took out my tools trying to take off the old propeller ...

The metalpin was so rusty that it to some extent fell apart when i tried to dismount it.

As i was unsure of what to do at that moment, i stopped the whole procedure and went back to the harbour with my old damaged propeller.

Anyone has a tip about how to continue ? Seems that i need a new metal pin to start with..

How do i dismount the old propeller under theese circumstances?

The new propeller will be a new ProPulse Artno:6901 ( www.Propulse.se )

Regards
Tom

Hi there in Sweden!

I don't really understand what pin you are talking about.

If it's the pin that should be bent so that the nut will not come off by itself, then just use some tools and try to pull out it. I bought a case of new similar pins and replaced it on my Johnson 60Hp -89.

But if it's a stronger pin that holds the propeller on place (have a 40Hp Evinrude -70) then you can try to use WD-40 or CRC or a heater.

I'm surprised that you found a ProPulse to your engine (-75). I also changed to a ProPulse (8901) and it's working great. Good grip and very stable.

Good Luck!

Regards,
Robbi

Hello robbi!

The "metal pin" is the "hairpin"-looking thing that holds the main propeller-screw in place. In swedish it's called "saxpinne" (!). After removing it, you should be able to take the main screw off and pull the propeller itself off and then install a new propeller. My metalpin was so rusty that it was impossible to remove it with the tools i had.

ProPulse is a swedish invention that i fully trust. Some "experts" are sceptic about it ... probably the same kind of people who said that internet was just a temporary "thing" that would last for a couple of years before it was forgotten ...

Regards
Tom

Hey Tom,

Did a google on saxpinne and that is what we call a cotter pin. It is used to keep the nut from backing off since the propeller nut is not tightened up snug. Use whatever means is available to get the rusted one out. A little WD40 and a needle nose pliers ought to do the trick. When you replace it make sure to get a stainless steel one.

Thanks Ralphy!

For taking time to learn swedish so you can help me. Much appreciated! At the same time you learned me that "saxpinne" in swedish is "cotter pin" in english.

Just talked to a service guy at the marina that will help me with this tomorrow. Propably he has the appropriate tools for this problem. Thanks!

Regards
Tom

Do not forget to lubricate the propeller shaft with a water proof grease!

here we refer to it as a split pin... most annoying thing though is trying to remove a rusted up one..
