I have a 99 Johnson 2 stroke that runs good but takes long to start. I spray starter fluid in the carbs, starts right up. Any suggestions what could be going on?

Is this a new to you motor or a new problem?
Can you explain your starting procedure?

Push it in while cranking. Once it starts you don’t need to push it in any more. You will only need to push it in on cold starts. Once it’s warm it should fire just turning the key.

prime the gas bulb, push in the choke a few times. Turn the key. I was recently told to push in while turning the key. I've only had the motor less then a month. It was fine the first few times out.

It's not a choke (no carb flaps) it's a primer. Some would say better than a choke and I would agree.

When pushing in on the key while engaging the starter it shoots extra fuel into the intake manifold making it easier to start when cold. Once it starts release the key.

Under the cowl next to the carb you will see a black plastic thing with a red knob or switch on it. That's the electric primer. Red knob does more things if you need to start the motor without battery power.

Like Racerone says....learn about the primer system because you may need to use all of it's functions some day.

Lots of videos on it.

This is why new motors with ----" push the button to start " ----Are now so popular.------In my opinion if you learn / understand how things work, you will save a lot of beer tokens.
