Is there anyway to tell if the lower gear drive is operational without starting the motor?. Also I need to locate plugs and crush washers for the gear lube vent and drain holes. Any help is appreciated.

About all you can do (without the motor running) is see if it will shift from forward to neutral to reverse. Change your gear oil and look for small pieces of metal in the oil as the old oil drains out. Grab the prop while it's in gear and you'll know if it's engaged or not. You can get the fill screws and washers here at Iboats.

But the dog clutch may not necessarily engage while the engine is not running, so do not force it ( In fact my owners manual tells me not to attempt to engage gear if the engine is not running! )

However if you slowly turn the flywheel, or the prop, it should engage

Thanks again you guys for good information. However the fill screws and washers are not available for that motor herre on iboat. I sent them an email and they suggested that I post a new thread and ask around about where to get them. *S*

The drain and vent screws and the washers should be readily, and cheaply available at your nearest marina - same screws and washers are used on pretty much all brands of outboards.
