I have a 1965 Johnson 6 hp that I use for a kicker and it runs fine and the RPM's seem normal until I put in under a load (in gear, in the water). It seems like it's running at about 50% throttle or lower when it's actual wide open. I checked the plugs, wires, fuel, fuel filter and all seems fine. Any ideas?

Thanks,

rat

Hi rat....being a 65', it should have two adjustments on the front. One for high speed and one for low speed. Have you tried the high speed adjustment?

I tried adjusting the hi speed and low speed and neither made a difference under a load. I'm about ready to start digging into the ignition and see if anything there does the trick

Hey, how ya' doin. Take a look at the carb around where the float bowl and carb mate up. If you see a black gasket, pull the carb and install a rebuild kit. If you have the old style cork float, it may "water logged" with gas and alowing your engine to flood. The old cork floats were coated with shelack. The new fuels play H**l with them. Eats it right off. The float gets full of gas and won't rise to shut off the gas. Also a look at the pump won't hurt either. Check fuel lines and if they are very hard, replace them and make sure the connections are tight. Good Luck!! :D
