Re: Johnson 60 Help!

Drop the lower unit and spin the engine. If still binds it's an internal problem (broken ring, piston skirt, rod, etc). If is free, then there is a lower unit problem.

Silvertip,

Did you not see the pictures? The middle piston blew. Lower unit seems fine. I actually was able to clean out a lot of the debris inside the crankcase and was able to get the flywheel to spin. But I believe I am going to buy a rebuild kit for my motor from a guy on ebay who has pretty good feedback....

I just need to figure out which of the two kits to get for my motor as it probably would make a huge difference in what would work, and what would not work...and not knowing the exact model of my motor...this can get quite challenging.

Dhadley is one of the men I would be interested in talking to before proceeding. He has probably rebuilt more than we have seen.

If the rest of the motor is sound, I would say that you are on the right track by rebuilding it. Thre are also plenty of places to buy rebuilt powerheads so that might be an option to consider. In either case, I would definately want to track down the reason for the failure though. No sense in fixing one problem just to have it happen again because some other problem wasn't addressed!

Re: Johnson 60 Help!

Thanks for the input everyone. The motor really has been very reliable up to this point, and I have everything cleaned up so nice now that it would really be awesome to rebuild the internals myself and get it back on the water. I will try to contact Dhadley to see if he has any recommendations for me. Thanks all I always appreciate input and advice!

P.S. I tried private messaging Dhadley but his private message box was full! DOH!
