hi,

As stated in title , am in the middle of helping a mate with his 60 vro 1990 bj60elesm and after firing it up it stalled , and on further inspection there was a water leak under the cowling. When i removed the bottom plug water flowed out!! This is new ground for me so
a. why is the water in there
b. is it a big job to fix
c. is it costly

any advice please....?

a. water circulates around the piston cavities to keep them cool, water has gotten in there because hopefully the head gasket failed
b. not too bad with several possible gotcha's
c. not bad if you do it yourself and everything goes well

***Gotchas***
Since this motor is over 20 years old and has been run in salt the head, head gasket, and block probably have rust that will have to be tapped with a rubber mallet to remove. You will more than likely break a cylinder bolt when you try to remove the head. If all goes well and you can remove the head you will see the root cause of the issue. If lucky it is just a gasket that can be replaced and remounted. Unless of course you break bolts that will have to be tapped out.

The attchment below shows the three parts seperated

The average shop will charge you $100 just to look at it.

I'd go for the head gasket first.

Exhaust cover gasket may also be bad. It's the big flat plate on the side of the block.

That mtr is the 56 cu" mtr and was different than the 49 cu" mtrs which had plates and gaskets. The gasket on this mtr is for a cover plate only.

I'll pull off the cylinder head this weekend so and I'll report back with findings. Hopefully though what i'm looking for is as Boobie has stated is a prob with the cover plate yes ? if not then check the exhaust gasket.

I would do a compression test first. Good compression, look at the exhaust cover. Bad compression, look at head gasket.

UPDATE:

well i'm very happy to report back that the head gasket was shot so replaced it so hopefully prob solved, and only broke one bolt which lucky enough was able to be screwed out with a vice grips..

Am now going to change the exhaust gasket and carb/air silencer gasket while i'm at it as well, can anyone think of any other that might as well be done at this stage or will that do ??

thanks for the advice folks. Just love coming on here when I have a problem, I have learned so much from you guys on here and from reading other posts so just wanna say a big thanks to Iboats and i recommend it to all my mates over here..

I tend to use anti-seize all the time, must be a hold over habit from working all those years on salt water engines.

Can't post a picture, but check with your local auto parts store or contact a marine dealer.
I am sure that there is something available in your part of the world.
