Hi guys and girls.

I was given a Fletcher arrowsport 14ft over christmas.

I have cleaned her up and had her on the muffs running nice and quiet, smooth and starts first time... REALLY CHUFFED!

However,....

I took her for the maiden voyage on saturday and we launched up river and slowly cruised out to the harbour, then out to sea (christchurch dorset)

Everything was perfect and she ran really well!

Then she died. (as if it was a fuel problem)

We were full throttle on the controls and she was going well.

She started back up, so we turned back and headed home.

We went back up to full throttle slowly and everything was good, but at the mouth of the run into the harbor she died again.

Just before she died i pumped the fuel ball and it made no difference. The throttle was fully forward, but she just died as if there was no fuel / ignition.

After 10 minutes or so of using the ores to head towards shore, and not getting very far i decided to try one more time to get her started, she fired, but now only on two of the 3 cylinders.

It was enough to get us up the 100m run and to the safety of the local pub whilst i fetched the van and trailer.

Yesterday, i put her on the muffs and made the effort to find what cylinder wasnt working and do the man thing, of just look at it for ages, until someone planted some usefull knowlege in my head! HAHAHA

She fired up first time, and ran perfect, i gave a little rev and all was sweet again!!!!!!

Confused i put it all away and left it...

Can anyone give me any suggestions as to where to start looking please?

i have already bought plugs and a filter, was going to do that before i had problems anyway, but cant see either being the root cause, esp as she was running so well for at least half hour before we got right out to sea.

she hasnt been run for at least a year, and is premix, 50:1, the fuel and oil is new, so is the battery.

Thanks in advance! Really appriciate any help..

Ahoy, Dan,

I can think of two things that might contribute to your symptoms.

1. Outboards are expert at pretending to be running sweet when there is no load. She may, in fact, be sick.

2. Electronic components of ignition systems may work fine at certain temperatures but fail when hot/cold.

I would investigate both possibilities. Good luck. :)

Thanks JB,

That means a trip to the boat guy... :( cant test anything under load / at the right temp at home

one, no tank to run it in and two, neighbours that will moan at a boat being run up for more then 2 minutes while testing...

This boating malarky is a money pit!

Does anyone have any specific tests that could be done to rule one thing out at a time until im left with a culprit?? obviously a test tank isnt avalible, so has to be done off the muffs... Or am i best to just bite a bullet (however big) and take to to the man in the know??

Will keep you posted with any results...

Re: Johnson 60Hp 1992 Help please.

Hi guys!

Working on the basis of, its broken, so i cant break it, i removed the head cover and it was BLATENT why it wasnt running well!

The piston in the top cylinder was a mess! Bits missing, metal impregnated into both piston and head cover!

I then took it to the Boat guys who said it was going to be a ?600 repair bill, and that was for a Hone, replacement piston and rings (only new rings on broken piston (replaced) and only a hone on the cylinder that wasnt right!?)

That seemed a bit steep and to be honest, i dont have ?600 knocking around (Who does??) i was also confused as to why you wouldnt replace all the rings and lightly hone the other two clyinders whilst you were there??? but what do i know?!?

So, Disheartened i took her home....

I have since come to the conclusion that its broken so i cant break it, and even if i do, i wont be in a worse position ie No boat!

I bought some parts, namely a new piston, 3 new sets of rings, a Head gasket, plugs and filters.

Im going to do this repair myself and would love some help from you guys please, "an IDIOTS guide to what im doing"!

If we take it one section at a time, id really appriciate it!

here is where im at at the moment.

1) i have removed the carbs and stripped them to clean them up, noting which one went on which cylinder, so i can pay particular attention to the top carb as i suspect a blockage, hense the piston failure! i need to source the route cause before repair as it will just happen again as soon as i take her out!

I have found the carbs to be very clean and quite tidy inside!??!? was expecting sludge etc but nothing! nice n clean!???

I have run into the problem that i cant get to the high speed jet, how do i do this and is there a "how To" regarding this stage please???? I am aware of the metal washer type cover to the area of the High speed jet, but have read you can clean them without removing that bit as apparently its a pain in the backside and not really a job for someone in experienced????? Any advice welcomed!

2) I then plan on Removing the head from the engine and "honing" the three cylinders this weekend, with particular attention to the top cylinder, replacing the broken piston, installing the 3 new sets of rings and reseating the head itself.

Obviously the head will need a Very good clean after honing to remove any traces of dirt etc, but whats best to clean it with?? Carb cleaner?? then wipe round with 2 stroke oil pre assembly?!

3)What do i do with the head cover, its inpregnated with metal and damaged from the obvious ring breakup.... nothing sticks out or proud of the head cover, and doesnt look as though it will cause any connection with the piston when running.... do i need to tidy it up, and how do i do that?

I really appriciate your help and ask that you do remember, im not a pro, im just trying to get out on the water with what ive got.

I would love to just drop it off to someone with experience and pick it up finished and working but i just dont have the funds to do it!

Im not a complete idiot, and so far (as weird as it sounds) am enjoying pulling the boat appart and finding it very satisfying uncovering things that need fixing. Its a massive learning curve and i have prob made more then enough stupid comments / questions for one post! :)

On that note, Thanks again for any help and input!

Regards

Dan
