Johnson 60hp starting problem

I have a 94/or95 johnson 60 hp outboard. Starts well when cold. If run to operating temperature and then engine turned off for 10-20 minutes, it will not fire even with good starter functioning. If engine is off for 30 minutes or more, it will fire right up. It is as if the engine has to cool to a certain point to let if fire. ?? some kind of vapor lock that releases after a certain amount of time.
Any suggestions?

Re: Johnson 60hp starting problem

welcome to iboats.

Been like that since you got it?
Done any recent maintenance to the motor?
Any other symptoms? idles, accelerates, cruises ok?
Warm start ok between 0 and 10-20 minutes after shut down?

Check for spark during the non-starting period.

Re: Johnson 60hp starting problem

It does appear to be electrically related, because it multiple attempts to start it result in flooding. I think we are getting fuel to the engine. Runs fine at all operating speeds. This seems to be a problem over the last couple of years. We have had difficulty even starting it cold, but annual services over the last few years, solved that problem. solenoid failing with heat?

Might check for spark the next time it happens.

Re: Johnson 60hp starting problem

Appearances can be deceiving, don't assume anything especially if it's easily tested.

Solenoid? If the starter spins at all, then the solenoid is fine. If the starter engages the flywheel and spins it at it's normal cranking speed, then the starter and battery are fine. Engine needs to turn about 300 RPM in order to generate spark.

Pull a spark plug, reattach it to the boot, hold it against the engine block and look for spark while somebody turns the engine over with the key. Then do the other one.

Have spark on both, get a spark tester (couple bucks at auto parts store), set it for 7/16", clip it to the engine block, attach the plug leads (one at a time) and look for spark while the engine is cranked.

Report your results.

are you pushing in the key activating the primer? if so don't. try raising the fast idle lever.
