OK. Just bought a boat and love every bit of it. Took it out yesterday for the first time on the lake and it ran strong for 15 minutes and then started to die as if starved for fuel (you know the bogged down sound with loss of power). I had my wife squeeze the primer bulb on the tank before it quit and then vrooooom right back up to speed for another 2 minutes then boggg. "Squeeze the bulb wifey" vrooom back up to speed and so on and so on! What is the deal with that? I noticed after getting the boat home and checking the tank that I forgot to loosen the vent screw, even though it was not super tight! WOuld that make a difference. The hoses from the tank are pretty stiff as well even thought the primer bulb is soft. Does any of this have anything to do with the engine issues. Also where in the world do I find the motor identification number on this thing? I only found some numbers on the cylinder head and freeze plug...Help! Need to identify motor in order to get parts.

One more question while I'm at it! Can I put the portable tank in the front of the boat and just run a length of fuel line from the primer bulb to the outboard?

Re: Johnson 60hp V-4

Vent closed would produce results you saw.

Or the fuel pump is shot, or there is an air leak somewhere between the fuel pump and level of the gas in the tank.

Sure, you can put the tank anywhere you want.

The model & serial numbers are on the metal plate, front center of the motor, above the tilt, below the lower cowling. The V4-60 was only made 1964-67, model numbers VX-10 thru VX-13. They are almost identical, so it doesn't make a huge difference.

Thanks for the answers. When you said level of gas in the tank what exactly did you mean? Could a loose fitting cause the engine to act as described? Are stiff fuel lines a problem. Thanks

Level in the tank, as in zero. Any fittings allowing air into the fuel system will also result in what you observed, as will junk around the tank pickup screen. Stiff lines are OK, but run the risk of cracking if really stiff ... again bad.

Check up the fuel pump, might have a broken valve, or clogged filter..

I ran a 90 hp with the vent closed in my 9 gallon portable tank.....

didnt notice anything until i went to check if i needed to buy gas again and found this:

it never sputtered.....Id say you have a faulty fuel pump.... or an air leak..or both

Bob, if he has a metal tank, it probably wouldn't collapse ... the motor would just start sagging in RPM.

actually I never knew they made a 60 HP V4

I thought the V4's started about 80 hp.

and I thought the 60 Hps were 2 or 3 cylinders inlines

Problem solved. went to wallmart and purchased a new hose and bulb kit. pushed the fittings on the tank and motor tight, made sure the tank vent was open and voila ran great for hours. Now all I need to do is figure out the sputtering at certain rpm's. Thanks everyone!!!
