I just bought a boat with a 1973 johnson 65 hp on it. I fired it up today, and it runs like a champ. My problem is when i put it in gear. It goes in reverse fine, but when i put it in forward the propeller doesnt spin and when it does start to spin it makes a clicking or grinding sound and then stalls out the motor. Is this caused by my gears. if so can i just change the forward gear. Any advice will be appreciated.

I am in the process of taking apart the foot, but I am having problems getting the snap rings behind the propeller off. Where can I get a some LONG snap ring pliers.:mad:

Sounds like a bad clutch dog. Do yourself a favor and buy an OEM service manual before you proceed. You will need a special tool to pull the propshaft, etc. from the gearbox. All of the necassary items will be covered in the manual, which is available at iboats and a few other places.

Could have been as easy as an adjustment.

You really need to replace all the gears as a matched assembly, mix and match in a gear case seldom turns out well and normally just cost you alot of money when it explodes.

The last I looked a "cheap" gearset for my 50 was about $250 and then you have to get the new gears in and shimmed to within several thousandths of an inch, not something you can just do.

I would look on Ebay, you should be able to get a complete lower for much less than just the gears that won't work will cost you.

Don't mean to be harsh or negative, it just isn't something you can do especially with out a manual and the reason I know this is because I have done it and they just don't last and in the long run it costs you twice as much to "save" money as it does to do it right the first time.

Find a used lower on Ebay.
