Johnson 65 hp steering question

I have a 1968 65 hp v4 on a 1969 Glastron v156 with hydrolic steering. Question: what is the best way to attach the hydrolic ram to the motor? The original setup no longer exists as it rusted out. What is left is the bolt snapped off at the end of the ram. I will need to drill out the remaining rusted bolt to put me in a position to attach the ram to the bracket on the outboard...

A picture would be helpful so we can all see what exactly has rusted out. The link below is to Teleflex's online library and shows the installation instructions for their Clevis Kit which attaches the telescopic ram at the motor end of a steering cable to the Tiller Arm of an outboard motor. I believe your model motor was originally equipped with the old-style "carrying handle" arrangement for attaching the steering system but I could be wrong. If I am correct, then you will need an additional piece of hardware that bolts on your carrying handle and functions as a tiller arm. I am unable to find that in Teleflex's website but have it scanned and saved in my computer. It is interesting that you would have hydraulic steering on that rig. Are you sure it isn't just a push-pull cable? Yeah, it's picture time.

It looks mechanical to me, not hydraulic. Picture is too small to tell what has rusted away.

Yeah, that's an old push-pull cable with a threaded end for a ball joint. New cables are not threaded, only a hole through the end, and take a different kind of "ball joint"--not a ball joint at all but does the same thing. I suppose what you wind up doing depends on whether the rest of the cable is still good. If it is, probably the goal would be to get the ball joint off and replace it with same kind. If you have to go with a new cable, get the new type end for it too. Your Teleflex dealer can help.

Thanks for the replies.

So, now that I know it's a push/pull and it appears to ne functioning, it sounds like it's worth repairing.

Will the end come off or do I need to drill through the rusted out broken off bolt remaining in the threaded portion at the end of the rod.

I suspect the ball joint pieces are parobably hardened steel and undrillable.

stainless bolt, you can try to drill it out with titanium bit.

If the end connection is unusable, does it detatch? If not, will I have to replace the rod and cable back to the helm?

If the steel end piece comes off you could use OEM part 172519 [steering connector kit].

Otherwise try adapting the teleflex clevis kit parts if you find that you can drill a large enough hole.

This is what I use - I got it through my local OMC/BRP dealer, who ordered it from Donovan Marine. Donovan is a wholesaler, so I couldn't buy it diretly.

Does anyone know how the end piece is attached to the rod?

If threaded I could try soaking it with a penatrating oil. It's pretty rusted and if I drill through it I am not sure if it will hold for the long term. I would prefer to replace and install new linkage to the motor.

Pretty sure it's the old sytle threaded rod end. Here's a link to the Teleflex version of the part:

One other thought about your setup - you should either replace your transom bracket or eliminate it, by going to an adapter like the one I use. Your bracket looks like its very rusty and it could be unsafe.

I also prefer the system that I use, because it doesn't restrict the tilt on the motor. The transom bracket system usually does to some degree.

I would also inspect the entire steering wheel/drum and cable system. If it is in the same condition as the parts shown in your photo, it might be time to replace the whole thing. The good news is that these systems are not excessively expensive. If I remember correctly, I think I paid about $120.00 for the last one that I bought.

Thanks. Yes I am planning on replacing the bracket as well. I am in the process of removing the old and replacing it with a Teleflex outboard clamp block "SA27055P".

I will try to remove the rusted rod end today without damaging the rod.

Made some progress over the weekend.

Cleaned up the rod end and drilled a 3/8" hole through the rod and old snapped off bolt with a titanium bit. Thanks for the suggestion it went through the stuff in about five minutes.

It looks like I left enough meat on it support a clevis with a 3/8" bolt. I may have to grid off an 1/8 of an inch of so to get it to fit the opening.
