I've had my 1979 6hp Johnson in storage for six years now (time goes by fast when kids arrive :) )
I haven't tried starting it yet but was wondering if there is some recommended things I should change. Will the water and fuel pumps be ok?

LakeFisher,,

A water pump service would be a very good idea. Lower unit fluid change also. Make sure to replace the srew gaskets on the drain/fill plugs.

Don't try to start it on old gas. Use fresh 87 octane mixed 50:1 (one pint per six gal.)

If it starts up and runs OK, you're good to go!

Good Luck!!

I just went through the same thing you are about to go through. My 4 hp Johnson seahores was sitting for 15 years in a garage,First thing you need to do before anything! (1) change the impeller!!(2) clean the carb (3)flush the tank real good(4)replace the fuel lines and inline filter(5)install new plugs(5) fresh gas mixed 50:1 ratio (6)fire it up and go!"DONT USE STARTING FLUID!!!!"
Good luck.

No fuel pump on a 1979
My 1965 6HP Johnson has one. I'm sure the 1979 got one too.

That would be the first 1979 OMC 6 hp without a fuel pump - they started with fuelpump on the 6(5.5) hp model in 1960 before that they had a pressure tank system.
