What about those spark plug wires?

They are supposed to metallic (copper) core 7mm wires. I wonder if those orange wires are carbon core; like you would use in automotive applications?

If in doubt you might as well swap them out while you have everything apart.

O'Reilly auto sells the correct wire by the foot. 69 cents a foot last time I checked.

IMG-20120629-00186.jpgWell I had a buddy lend me his 2.5hp for the weekend so we could get out camping and fishing.

Got the top off, here is a pic, looks like the coil's are cracked? I know they need to be changed but does this really effect the spark? And those wires do look more automotive...

those coils are toast!!! time for a new set, and its well worth the $1.50 a foot x5ft to replace the wires with new stuff. ( read the top secret file on how to set the coils properly on the bosses, so they arent set back to far, or out to far. !!)

top secret file? haha is that the link you posted above? And being a follow Scotian, where would be the best place for me to get new coils for this, anywhere maybe in Dartmouth or Halifax? Or a Canadian website or anything would be great if possible! Thanks again for your help.

i deal with uap/napa, or sealand industries in chester.....sealand usually has coils, wire by the foot, plug boots etc...in stock. uap is usually a waiting thing. ( prices are comparable) . not sure about any omc dealers in the hrm tho, but there should be a few, if its more convienent that way.

well Chester is close enough, any idea what a coil might go for? And this looks to be around a 1968ish?

Re: Johnson 6HP Problems

two coils are gunna cost ya around $60 at uap, sealand probably close to that amount also. got wire at sealand for $7 for 6 ft, but there was extra wire left over. two plug boots at sealand were $7.62. i did get two condensors at sealand also...$10.92 for both. ( add tax for all). as mentioned, sealand usually has everything you may need in stock, but call ahead, just in case you need to order and save a trip in.

coil.jpgwhat does a water pump and thermo go for roughfully?

So I got new coils, wires. Just a little confused with the coil boots... They gave me coil boots with the wire, and plug boots. I get the plug boots but unsure of the coil boots. Why do I have the little boot AND a coil boot, I am unsure of how the little rubber piece that came with the coils goes with the coil boot? Here is a pic. What I am referring to as a little rubber piece is above the coil.

the large end of the boot slides onto the coil and the plug wire slides into the small end...look under the gearcase diagrams at the marineengine link for ~ prices of the w/p and the thermo will be under cylinder/crankcase diagrams

when you remove the old coils you will see where the boots go. and remember to screw the wires into the coils, not push them in.

i do understand that, but there is a little rubber "boot" that came with the coil. if you look at the picture I posted in my last post you will see it right above the coil on my table. Thanks again!

no I did not... Should I have? I am in the middle of installing the coils, and am having a problem with the green wire that comes off the coil and goes to the points... Here is a picture.. The screw driver is pointing at what I am talking about.
I cant figure out how to instal it without it touching the middle of the motor where the shaft spins. I see that being a huge problem once it starts. does it go a certain way to the screw?IMG-20120704-00227.jpg

maybe I need to shorten the wire?

Re: Johnson 6HP Problems

dont shorten the wire, the other coil looks close to right. the green wire need to be tucked under the coil, and the black wire needs to be pushed back against the coil to keep it from rubbing.
