Johnson 70 HP lower ends 1979

Will a 1973 lower End fit on to a 1979 motor ?<br /><br />I can get one here in town for $100.00 , but i'm afraid of what the condition of the unit will be in.<br /><br />Is there any way to tell wear and tear easy ??<br /><br />Thank you.

Hi Sirius3K,<br /> No, they won't interchange - at least not as a simple bolt on. 1973-1975 models used a Hydromechanical shifting mechanism, which has a different shift throw compared to yours. If you can get the bell-crank from the powerhead of the 1973 model, you might be able to pull it off, but it will require pulling the powerhead off and some other tweaking and adjusting to get it to work. Not easy, but it could be done...<br />- Scott
