I have a 1986-90 Johnson 70 on my Pontoon. I am curious about the charging system on it. Can any of you guys provide me a link so I can study it or can you tell me How many amps it is and what kind of system is it? Is it a permanent magnet alternator like on a harley or is it a feild would type of unit like a car alternator. Also does anyone make a higher output charging system for outboard engines? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Re: Johnson 70 hp

it creates electricity thru the flywheel and stator, the converted to DC current by the rectifier, to charge the battery. and most don't have much output until atleast 2500 rpms.

It's a magnetically induced current, just like in a harley (or BSA, or Triumph, or . . .).

I figured thats what it was. Do you know how many amps it makes?

I don't off-hand. But, you should specify a little more clearly what you're interested in so someone can chime in.

Amps AC off the alternator, or Amps DC off the rectifier/regulator.

I'm guessing you don't much care about the AC output (only really useful for testing the alternator) and want the highest DC output from the whole system you can muster. Or, at least you want know at what rate you're charging the battery so you can calculate potential drain.

Im wanting to know the maximum output that the battery would see. So yes the DC output current. I am just curious as to how much it CAN produce. I work for a starter and alternator company in tech support and was just curious...
