I have a 89 70hp johnson that has been giving me intermittent stalling. It finally would not start so i have been testing stuff. It has spark but very weak. I suspect the power pack or stator but how can i test to make figure out which one, without a DVA.

you really can't. I suppose you could do the resistance checks on the coils and also on the stator. That might show a glaring error but it certainly is not foolproof. I have had many stator windings whose resistance was considerably out of spec but still produced the necessary voltages.

Check the stator as it is what charges capacitor in pack....weak in = weak out

Check the STARTER MOTOR too.-----Get battery load tested.-----When these motors crank slow you will have ignition problems !!

thanks for the responses guys, so far i have ohmed everything that i can and is within spec. coils, rectifier, stator, timer base. starter is cranking pretty good spining the motor over at about 800 rpms. one thing i noticed that i thought was a little weird is that while running the motor voltage at the battery is reading 16 volts seems pretty high.
