looking at a used boat with a 65 Johnson 75hp El. start manual shift on it. I haven't seen much in this forum on that particular year/rating. Anything I should look for, other than does it run of course! Was/is this a well respected unit?
TIA

strong motors, gas hungry. get controls with it
BUYING A USED MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.

Re: johnson 75v4

I'm not sure what Johnson had in their line in that year. Evinrude had 3 model's of the 75, speedifour, speedifour heavy duty, starflite. The speedifour had a generator charging system with a large junction box mounted on the transon. It had a standard gearcase. The starflite had a electric shift gearcase. It had a alternator charging system with the electric's under the hood, mounted on the power head, and no junction box. The speedifour heavy duty had a manual shift with a heavy duty gearcase with a different gear ratio. Part's for any of these engines' could be hard to find, and exspensive if you do. As an example, the rubber cog belt driving the generator. Even if you found one, it would be a very old rubber belt.
